Three rules that keep your ballot valid
Use your own jurisdiction. A drop box only accepts ballots for the city or township that owns it. A Pontiac ballot goes in a Pontiac box; a Waterford ballot goes to Waterford.
Sign the outside envelope. An unsigned return envelope cannot be counted until you fix it with your clerk.
8:00 PM on Election Day is final. Received — not postmarked — by 8:00 PM. Inside the last two weeks, use a drop box instead of the mail.

Absentee ballots mailed
Clerks begin mailing absentee ballots about 40 days before Election Day. Request yours early so you have time to return it.
Mail it back at least a week early
A mailed ballot must be received by your clerk — not just postmarked — by 8:00 PM on Election Day. The Secretary of State recommends mailing at least two weeks ahead.
Drop box or clerk's office
Inside the last two weeks, skip the mail: use a drop box in your own city or township, or hand your ballot to your clerk.
Election Day, 8:00 PM
Drop boxes lock and clerk counters close at 8:00 PM on Election Day. A ballot that arrives after that cannot be counted.
